Some particle physics experiments need very low “cosmic radiation” background, so you have to go deeply underground with them. CERN physicists have been doing experiments in alpine tunnels. The Gotthard tunnel is particularly suitable, because it has lots of rock shielding overhead. The Gotthard Base Tunnel 35-mile in Erstfeld, Switzerland is the world's longest railway tunnel runs through the Alps. Notice the heads of state present for this 1-hour-long dedication ceremony.
